Story
The ambient layer and what it actually is
January 9, 2026
Introduction
Every AI tool today is a destination.
You stop working, open something, ask a question, read the answer, close it, and resume. That interruption — even if it's 90 seconds — breaks your flow, and across a team of hundreds doing it dozens of times a day, it compounds into the 1.8 hours of lost productivity daily that the research shows.
Olis was built to remove that break entirely.
Ambient layer means the AI is a presence, not a destination. It sits on your screen as a persistent layer while you work, reading the context of what you're doing right now, and surfacing the answer before you've fully formed the question.
Yes, you're right. It's not a chatbot or a search bar. It's closer to an AI assistant at work, your cubicle neighbor who reads over your shoulder and slides you the right document across the desk the moment you need it, as if they knew you were going to ask for it.
Technology & Security
Building this kind of an interaction requires solving an extremely hard technical problem — real-time intent detection across live workflows, with guaranteed privacy and security.
You have to understand what someone is doing and predict what they'll need next, all within milliseconds, across hundreds of different enterprise tools simultaneously. That's a fundamentally different engineering challenge from building a search box. No one else has shipped this at enterprise scale.
But here's the tension every other Enterprise AI tool faces: the more connected and intelligent you make the AI, the more data you need to centralize, and centralizing data means it leaves your walls, which is a hard "NO" for most Fortune 500 legal, compliance, and security teams. Therefore, every major player in this category resolves this tension by accepting the trade-off: "yes, your data goes into our cloud, but we'll secure it well."
Not Olis. We refused that trade-off entirely.
Not because we'd like a challenge, but because we understand that it is possible to create a system that is deeply connected, responsive, and operationally powerful without forcing customer data to leave its own environment. That standard is harder to achieve, but it is the only standard that made sense to us. So we built every part of the product from scratch.
It was hard, and took a lot of patience. Building an AI product from full scratch meant designing the product, the intelligence layer, and the surrounding architecture with privacy, control, and enterprise-grade security at the core. It meant building with discipline, not convenience. We did not want to assemble a company around shortcuts and call it innovation. We wanted to build something worthy of the environments it serves. But the results were incredible.
Closing thoughts
The real game-changer in building a private and secure ambient layer, is that it can be deployed in industries that have been completely locked out of AI knowledge tools until now, such as hospitals, banks, security, law firms, and the government.
Most AI tools make you smarter when you remember to use them. Olis makes your whole organization smarter by being impossible to forget, because you never had to open it in the first place. That's the gap. And once a team's workflow is built around something that ambient, switching back to a search tab feels like going back to a flip phone.
